ꟾ Don’t tell me how to dress By: Fatima Xenia P. Ubas Women’s empowerment is fostering women’s self-esteem in which one can have the freedom and the right to decide by themselves. These have become one of the most controversial issue before where in women were told to dress decently to avoid harassment. “It is what a woman wears and that is the main cause of rape and sexual assault,” said Cindy Sirinya Bishop. Local authorities also issued a warning for women “not to dress sexily”. Well for me, we can’t dictate one’s person to wear something that is against their will. Let anyone wear whatever they want to. Their body, therefore their rules. Afterall, Woman’s worth is not measured by what they wear. Usually, as of these days’ women are continuously experiencing street harassment or catcalling. These is not because of what they wear but because of some men who are actually perverts. Unfortunately, some girls were forced to cover up themselves just to avoid the catcall but adjustments aren’t enough to stop guys from doing it. Women are advised to change their behavior in order to prevent being raped. They're encouraged yet again to wear less revealing outfits, and avoid putting themselves in dangerous situations. Such ideas and misconceptions imply that the victim is at blame, removing the need for the offender to be held accountable. This blog can be an awareness for everyone and that these violence and abuse against women has to stop. Therefore, I conclude that, Women deserves to be respected no matter how or what they dress. As what the PNP have said, “Catcalling and other forms of harassment against women should not be blamed on their clothing,” (PNP). It is not the women’s fault like how anyone dressed why they’d experience street harassment but its the man who continued to do things that they think is normal. It doesn’t matter how or what a woman dresses, what does matter is how a man acts in front of them. We shouldn’t normalize catcalling, and will never allow it to be.
