Our emotional, psychological, and social well-being are all part of our mental health. It has an impact on the way we think, feel, and act. It also influences how we deal with stress, interact with others, and make decisions. Mental health is vital at all stages of life, including childhood, adolescence, and maturity.
Poor mental health and mental illness are not the same thing, despite the fact that the phrases are commonly used interchangeably. Without being diagnosed with a mental disorder, a person can have poor mental health. A person with a mental illness can also go through periods of physical, mental, and social well-being.
If you have mental health issues throughout your life, your thinking, mood, and behavior may be altered. Many factors play a role in mental health issues, including; genes or brain chemistry are examples of biological factors, trauma and abuse are examples of life experience and a family history of mental illness.
According to ABS-CBN News, "mental health of Filipinos, depression is the most common mental health problem worldwide, with some 300 million people suffering from it and can lead to suicide. Suicide was the second leading cost of death among 15-29 year olds around the world in 2015 (788,000 suicide deaths globally in 2015). Global suicide rate 10.7 per 100,000 population.
Depression and Suicide among Filipinos. 3.3 million Filipinos or 3.3% of total population suffer depressive disorders. 3.1 million Filipinos or 3.1% of the total population suffer from anxiety disorders. 2,558 reported suicide cases 2.9 suicide per 100,000 population in 2012. Nearly 8 in 10 of reported suicide cases in 2012 were males. Compared to other counties and ASEAN, the Philippines 2012 suicide rate of 2.9 per 100,000 was the lowest while Myanmar had the highest the suicide rate with 23.2 per 100,000. Among high school students 17% of high school students 13-15 years old said they attempted suicide at least once, 12% said they seriously considered attempting suicide and 11% have made plans on how they would commit suicide. Social media envy is a moderate significant predictor of symptoms of depression among Filipino high school students."
Overall health includes both mental and physical well-being. Depression, for example, raises the risk of a variety of physical health issues, including long-term diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. Similarly, having chronic illnesses raises the likelihood of mental disease. It's crucial to remember that just because we don't know what causes someone to have a mental health condition doesn't make it any less serious, deserving of notice and treatment, or easier to recover from than any other illness.
