IMPACT OF COVID-19: POVERTY AND EMPLOYMENT

Updated: Dec 8, 2021

Poverty is one of the most challenging situations that a person will have throughout life. There is a shortage of food to eat daily, clothing to wear, and shelter to keep people safe. Poverty has always been a problem for the majority of Filipinos. Even though the pandemic has not taken place, most of us were suffering before this. Poverty is defined by issues such as access to services such as health care and education, as well as marginalization and exclusion.

The most challenging part for all of us is simply getting through the day. We need to put in more effort and find better ways to live. As a result of the pandemic, there are numerous opportunities for people to work, but they were all went to waste or they haven’t got a chance to get the job. People who are already poor are becoming even poorer. Many people who rely on their jobs to cover their daily expenses had already vanished. The pandemic protocols had put them in a different situation. Pandemic has transformed the living conditions of children's family’s upside down. Many parents have lost their jobs or been furloughed, and many universities and colleges, and childcare facilities have largely closed. These difficulties are exacerbated for low-income families.

It is not impossible to start a new business during the pandemic, but it is a different matter to start one that will survive and not lead to losses. Poverty simulations indicate that the COVID-19 pandemic and the government's measures to contain the virus's spread will increase the number of homeless people in the country. Both national and local government agencies implemented various social safety nets to assist affected individuals, relatives, and business owners in learning to cope with the economic effects of COVID-19 and smoothing their consumption, particularly during the initial stages of the national lockdown, albeit temporarily.

Often, the focus of development has been on measuring and analyzing poverty to reduce it. While the poor face the prospect of remaining impoverished indefinitely, the non-poor are also vulnerable to poverty. The vulnerability has been highlighted in particular in the aftermath of the impact of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), which is expected to result in income declines due to reduced economic activity.

Now that we know how difficult it is to be poor without hard work, it may encourage all of us to work hard for our success. Is this something that everyone agrees on? If so, let us eventually change our strategies of being contented with what we have. To live a better life and survive daily, we must focus on our objectives for them to be more effective. We believe that all lives are valuable. Nobody should face discrimination or live in extreme poverty. We want a just and sustainable world in which everyone has the freedom to speak truth to power, assert their human rights, and build a better future for themselves.
